The new touchscreen based LG KS660 supports two SIM cards simultaneously, while the extravagant GD910 mobile phone takes the shape of a wristwatch and shines with 3G support for video calls.

LG KS660 is a dual-SIM phone supporting tri-band GSM connectivity. It has a 3-inch TFT touchscreen display with WQVGA resolution (400×240), 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording at 720×480@15fps. Additional specs include 50MB internal storage, microSD expansion slot (up to 4GB), Bluetooth and USB capabilities.

The unfortunately absent suspects are 3G and Wi-Fi. Since this is the first LG handset featuring two SIM cards, it will aim the Asian and Eastern Europe markets much like the Dual SIM lineup by Samsung.

The second mobile phone is LG GD910 and it comes in the unusual wristwatch form factor. Perhaps you remember the wristwatch prototype by LG that was displayed at the MWC 2008. Well, this they’ve managed to make it real this time and it would be first showcased at the CES 2009 next month.

LG GD910 is 13.9 mm thick and sports a 1.43-inch touch LCD screen. The main selling point of the device is that it allows for 3G video calls thanks to the front-facing camera.

Anyway behind the watch disguise you will also find HSDPA and Bluetooth connectivity, voice dialing and speech recognition, text-to-speech feature and a music player.

Currently, we don’t have any information about pricing or availability on both devices.

The latest piece of art in the Arte lineup appeared at Nokia website without a proper introduction from the manufacturer. The new Nokia 8800 Gold Arte follows on the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte but adds quite some luxury and tackiness to the package. The functionality remains identical, but you know - when it comes to Arte, plain technical capabilities just don’t tell the whole story.

Nokia 8800 Gold Arte

The main selling point of the new Nokia 8800 Gold Arte is the 18-carat gold plating and the high quality white genuine leather.

The Nokia 8800 Gold Arte has no other secrets as everything else is inherited by the 8800 Carbon Arte. And like it, the Gold Arte packs a 2″ QVGA OLED display with 16 M colors, 4GB on board memory (non-upgradable as there`s no memory card slot) and 3.2-megapixel autofocus snapper.

The accelerometer-based features such as tap-for-time and turn-to-mute are also available as before.

Price tag and availability are still unknown however we`ll keep you posted when more info surfaces.

Sony Ericsson has introduced a new accessory, which gives the photo maniacs the ability to take better pictures. The IM502 is a stand, with really portable dimensions (1.1 x 2.3 x 0.4 inches), so it shouldn’t take a lot of space, even when in one’s pocket. In order to attach a phone (only Sony Ericsson models) you should use the charging port, as the stand has the suitable connector.

In addition, its legs have been covered with rubber, so it won’t slide. You can also use it with a standard camera, which sounds really practical, since you can buy the IM502, even if you don’t have a Sony Ericsson phone. The price has not been announced on the manufacturer’s online store yet, but our source informs, that this accessory can already be found on some other official stores.

Google made optimizations on its search engine results for Android and iPhone. The result pages fit perfectly to the screens of all Android-based and Apple devices and load much faster. Currently the changes are available only in English.

Apple and Google Android devices are welcomed to use the new search results optimizations of the Google powerful search engine. There is no longer need of zooming or scrolling side-to-side, because the pages fit to the specific phones' screens. Also touch-friendly buttons and an option for expandable maps are available for users convenience.

All these optimizations are currently available only in U.S. English. iPhone and iPod touch devices need firmware 2.x to take advantage of the new Google functions. Anyway if you want to use the old-fashion view, there's always the "Classic" link at the bottom of every page.

Shortly after leaks of an 8-megapixel Samsung cameraphone on its way to T-Mobile, the US are about to get a double serving of Samsung M8800 Pixon. Having just approved Samsung T929, dubbed Memoir, FCC are busy with another version of the popular model.

The latter, called M8800L, is obviously bound to AT&T given the dual-band 3.5G support of 850 and 1900 MHz. The Memoir sports 1700 MHz HSDPA connectivity, but another major difference is notable - the camera flash has changed shape and position. As for the rest, most of the specs should keep sufficiently close to the original.

Having seen much of the Pixon in action, we guess Samsung will be hitting the right spot with the massive touchscreen and serious imaging power. By whatever name, the Pixon should be more than welcome to the US market.

As of now developers can get a fully SIM-unlocked T-Mobile G1 with unlocked bootloader that allows flashing of custom Android builds (no need of signed system images anymore). Called the Android Dev Phone 1, the special device will be available to all developers registered at the Android Market from 18 international markets including US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Hungary (with more to come soon).

The Android Dev Phone 1 is the next step by Google of making the Android OS as open source as possible. The device currently costs 399 US dollars with free shipping within US. The only prerequisite to buy one is to have a developer's registration over at the Android Market, which will set you back a one-time registration fee of 25 US dollars.

For now there is a limit of only 1 phone per developer and as Google point out the "Android Dev Phone 1 devices are not intended for non-developer end users. Since the devices can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end users operate these devices at their own risk."

Yeah right! Sounds scary, doesn't it?
Learn all about it over at Android Code base and get your registration (in just a few simple steps) here.

Motorola today announced the ROKR EM35, the latest addition to its music line. The new model is touted for its sound quality both during a call (thanks to Motorola’s CrystalTalk technology) and when listening to music, with headphones. According to Moto, “a unique algorithm enables music to sound as if it is playing in the space around your head, rather than inside of your eardrums”, which should result in higher sound quality. The EM35 features music dedicated keys on the front and the FastScroll digital wheel, known from the E8. It is the second Motorola to offer Widgets, which were announced with the cameraphone VE66. Like the latter, the EM35 is quad-band non-3G slider but unfortunately lacks Wi-Fi.
The Motorola MOTOROKR EM35 is expected to be available before the end of the year.

Well, it's official - Q3 2008 saw Apple's only current smartphone, the iPhone 3G, outsell the numerous devices based on the Windows Mobile platform not only in USA but on worldwide scale. That's some surprising news, we bet Mr. Jobs is already throwing in a dinner party.

Despite the global financial crisis the smartphone market share is still growing (though at a slower pace than last year) and territories are being remapped. The third quarter of 2008 saw some really interesting changes in position.

Nokia is still king of the hill with 42.4% market share in Q3, but for the first time they have a decline in sales as compared to last year.

Windows Mobile has shamefully slipped behind Apple proving that sometimes it's not all about pumped up specs, but user experience and service integration count big time as well.

RIM's Blackberry devices are also growing in popularity having 81.7% more sales than last year's quarter. And they should do even better in Q4. Seems like the Bold and the Storm just might liven up the conservative facade of the brand.

Different OSes are changing market shares too. For the first time Symbian has fallen bellow 50% market share possibly because of the rise in popularity of touch-screen devices, which effectively lacked in the Nokia portfolio in Q3. Sony Ericsson's UIQ wasn't there to fill the gap either.

The now elederly WinMo will probably continue to suffer hard hits from the competition due to its inferior user-friendliness. The OS definitely needs a serious refresh and we really hope to see one soon.

But user-friendliness is only part of the game. The successful future of the smartphone platforms will also depend on building up better application portfolios, wider online services with easier and more intuitive access. AppStore or no AppStore, Apple's application business model is one fine example of delivering the right content straight to the device hassle-free.

The Nokia N97 is most definitely one of the most loaded N-series devices out there, but that's not it's all about. The N97 is the first high-end device powered by the latest touchscreen Symbian S60 OS. And if the 3.5-inch touchscreen display is not enough for you, you can always slide-and-tilt it up so the large full QWERTY keyboard gets revealed.

Nokia N97

Tri-band HSDPA and quad-band GSM ensure world wide roaming, but the new Nokia N97 also boasts 32GB of internal memory, a 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, touch-enabled Nokia Maps with a digital compass, an accelerometer for auto screen rotation and a proximity sensor for auto screen turn-off during calls.

Nokia N97

The 16M color 3.5-inch touchscreen TFT display has a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels that should meet all your handheld widescreen multimedia needs. Of course all the basics are covered too - with stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm audio jack, TV-out and FM radio with RDS.

As you can imagine the loaded Nokia N97 is quite hefty - it weighs 150 g, but size-wise it's not bigger than say, the Apple iPhone 3G (except in thickness, that is).

Nokia N97 lifestyle shots

You may remember that we published the leaked Nokia smartphone roadmap and as it seems, the Nokia N97 is quite close in its description to the handset codenamed IP08 in this table. Have a look around. The good news is that obviously the roadmap is legit and there are some quite interesting handsets under way.

The Nokia N97 will be available in Q2 2009, at an estimated price of 550 euro before subsidies and taxes.

Most likely you've never heard of Lenovo making mobile phones. Still, they do - mainly for the Chinese market. Their new Lenovo P80 is a stylish flip phone that comes in various color combos. The P80 is slim, has an external OLED display and is equipped with a modest 3 megapixel camera.

In case you didn't know Lenovo actually sold their China-based cellphone business along with the brand to a company called Hony Capital. They have taken up the task of continuing that not so successful part of Lenovo's business and the first result is the new Lenovo P80.

The Lenovo P80 main display is a 2.8-inch TFT unit, but the device also has an ingeniously hidden 1-inch OLED one on the outside. The rest of the modest specs include a 3 megapixel snapper (CIF video @15fps), FM radio, Bluetooth and a microSD slot. There is dual-band GSM support and of course, but no 3G.

he target market for Lenovo P80 is logically China and it will be available in seven different colors. There is no info on pricing and availability yet, but you've probably guessed it - we just can't wait!

It`s now possible to run the QUAKE III Arena on your Nokia smartphone. And that`s not all - you can also use a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse for playing. The only condition is to have a S60 3rd Edition smartphone equipped with a TI OMAP 2420 processor (Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N82 and Nokia E90).

Developer of the first ever QUAKE III Arena port is Olli Hinkka who is also the developer of some of the best previous QUAKE ports for Symbian phones. This time he decided to enable a full Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support to achieve a better gameplay, which is otherwise unreachable due to the rather uncomfortable phone controls.

There`s also a possibility to run a game server on the mobile phone to enable multiplayer gaming.

Compatible with the QUAKE III Arena port are the S60 3rd Edition phones powered by a TI OMAP 2420 processor. Those include the Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N82 and Nokia E90.

Despite having the same chipset, the now elderly Nokia N95 isn`t among the compatible models as it has less RAM than the N95 8GB (half the amount, actually).

Ok, Ranger, go draw some blood - QUAKE 3 style!

Nokia reveals phone testing routine

Ever wondered what kind of testing the hardware of the phone gets before being released on the market? Today Nokia released a video showing more details about its testing facility and the testing process itself. The footage is from one of the 11 Nokia test centers documenting some of the more than 200 mechanical tests that each phone goes through before hitting the shelves.

As you might have guessed the tests vary quite substantially. The everyday use tests include placing the device with a shaker with hard particles to simulate placing your handset in a bag or a pocket with things such as key rings. Splash resistance is also checked to make sure that a cup of spilled coffee isn't going to ruin your evening by turning your phone in wreckage. Dust resistance is also properly inspected.

Bending and twisting tests • dripping water test • dust box test

The resistance to various weather conditions is also examined. Those include extreme hotness and coldness, humidity and continuous exposure to sun, which might cause bleaching.

The funniest part is the robustness testing when they simulate dropping the phone on the concrete, twisting it and applying strong pressure to it. Admit it - it is a nice thing to look at when it is not your phone that gets tortured.

Scratching test • dropping test machine • humidity test

Finally the phone keypad endurance is tested by special robotic arms that simulate several hundred thousand presses on each key. We wonder if Sony Ericsson did this test for the S500 and W580 that earned their sorry reputations for having faulty keypads.

Keypad durability test

We certainly hope that thanks to this intensive testing the endurance of the Nokia phones will improve. It is not too long since some of even the highest-end phones of the Finnish manufacturer used to have paint that is easily peeled off and frames a bit too fragile.

And here goes the video from Nokia for you to enjoy some extensive phone tormenting.

Google have taken searching to a next level and announced that they will be releasing an upgrade of their iPhone search application, which will feature voice recognition. So next time when you are out and about - don't just type in your search term, say it.

The new version of the Google Search application is expected to become available next Friday. When a user asks the application a question, the voice will be recorded and sent to the Google servers, analyzed and then sent along to the Google search engine.

Both Yahoo and Microsoft have voice services for handhelds. The Microsoft Tellme service can get you directions, maps and movie times, while Yahoo's oneSearch with Voice has a wider scope.

The Google system is not perfect, but it's targeted at outdoing everything what the competition offers. According to specialists, Google's advantage in this field is the ability to store and analyze vast amounts of data. This means that the service will be getting more accurate with time.

Another advantage over competitors should be the database of billions of queries that Google users have made - those can be used to produce a statistical model of the way various words match to one another.

The search application will also be using the accelerometer to activate its "Voice" mode - the user will only need to put the device next to an ear.

We are really looking forward to testing the software ourselves next week.

World Championship Pool 2007

We're all for pub games becoming professional sports, what with darts, pool and even table football spawning global competitions.

It's only a matter of time before the Olympics accepts 'drinking seven pints of cider before putting AC/DC on the jukebox and headbanging yourself unconscious' as a sport. And when it does, we'll be ready. Oh yes.

Sadly, our patchy pool skills are strictly amateur-grade. Happily, however, I-play's World Championship Pool 2007 makes it possible for us to mix it with the professional potters, although since pro pool is only big on the other side of the Atlantic, we're not exactly well-versed in who they are.

Still, the game lets you play three flavours of pool: 9-ball, 8-ball UK and 8-ball US. A 3D version is coming out soon (we'll review that separately), so this is the viewed-from-above 2D version, which keeps the graphics simple, and offers up quick-fire gameplay instead.
You start by picking a player, with each rated in power, spin and accuracy, so your choice does affect the gameplay. The controls are simple: moving left and right aims your shot (with a sight-line, naturally), before a press of the '5' key brings up a bar to set the power.

You can add spin by pressing '#' before making the shot, too, or change your cue angle by pressing '*' (or combine the two for the sort of swerve-tastic shots that'd earn you a week's free drinks on the house in your local pub).

The thing we like about World Championship Pool 2007 is that it's not too hard. The pockets seem larger than most mobile pool or snooker games we've played, so sinking balls isn't the frustrating holy grail we've seen elsewhere.

The balls clack around the table with a fair degree of realism, too, and the cushions, thankfully, aren't super-springy ??“ another failing we've seen on some mobile pool games.

So it's accessible, but it also offers reasonable depth. Championship mode sees you trying to win a tournament in one of the three pool varieties, while Arcade mixes up standard matches with trick shots and challenges to truly test your skills.

Quibbles? Well, it'd be nice to be able to create your own pool player with your name and preferred mix of abilities. And the Championship mode falls a bit flat when you win, with just a congratulatory message before sending you back to the menu screen.

Also, with pool suiting turn-based pass-the-handset play, it's surprising that there's no multiplayer option (although to be honest, if it was a case of space, we'd rather have decent physics).

We're still big fans of Gameloft's Midnight Pool, which has been out for a while now but just edges World Championship Pool 2007 for pick-up-and-play fun. However, that shouldn't put you off I-play's very decent title ??“ the only thing we'd mention is that if you've got a decent handset, you might want to wait for the all-singing 3D version due in a few weeks' time.
